What are Identity Problems?
Identity issues are associated with the struggle of developing a sense of self and grow into having a stable sense of identity. Identity problems may occur in individual suffering from relational issues, such as personality disorders.
When to seek help for Identity issues
During the teenage period identity issues are normal to experience and determining when to seek treatment can be difficult. Typically, when you feel stuck and anxiety or depression are preventing you from fulfilling your activities of daily living at work, school, or home, it is time to seek some help. Signs of identity issues evolving into a disorder include constant tension or worry about your life and who you are, having constant fears and worries about relating to other people, relational problems and difficulties about making important choices about your life trajectory.
Types of Identity Problems
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – 5th Edition (DSM-5, American Psychiatric Association, 2013) lists a number of disorders where identity issues place a strong role. Dissociative Identity Disorder is characterised by alter-egos or multiple personalities. Gender Dysphoria (also known as Gender Identity Disoder) is the distress a person experiences as a result of the sex and gender they were assigned at birth.
