What is Post Natal Depression?
Postnatal depression (also known as PND) can seriously interferes with self-care and caring for the newborn. PND affects not only the quality of a woman's life and her experience of mothering her baby, but also her infant, other children and her relationship with her partner. It usually begins between the second and third month after birth and may persist for 6/7 months. Without help or treatment, the consequences of PND can be long term for women and their families.
Post Natal Depression affects 10-20% of women following childbirth. Post Natal Depression, if untreated, can lead to recurrent depressive episodes, affect the child's development (e.g. below-average growth, malnutrition, chronic illness). In cases of severe depression, especially with psychotic symptoms, there is a risk of suicide and infanticide.
