What is Anger?
Anger is an emotion that is characterised by antagonism towards someone or something that has done you wrong. When anger is expressed in a healthy manner, it can give you a way to express negative feelings. Expression of anger can be achieved through several avenues. For example, expression of anger can be channeled into an artistic creation such as a poem or song.
Triggers for anger will be subjective for each individual but common triggers are manifested in the individual feeling as if they have been wronged or intentionally hurt by another person or entity. Additional triggers for anger include, feeling unappreciated or dismissed by someone, people taking advantage of you, being rude to you, or that someone is trying to control and manipulate you.
When does Anger become a problem?
Anger generally becomes a problem when it negatively impacts others people, your performance in the workplace, and your health or quality of life. Anger is considered “abnormal” when the intensity and the duration extend beyond the brief duration that is common for healthy anger. Additional cues that indicate when therapy is needed are physical aggression toward others, reprimands in the workplace as a result of anger, and problems with health due to anger.
Anger Management Therapy and Treatment
Therapy can be very beneficial when addressing anger. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be very helpful when addressing anger. CBT can assist you in finding alternative ways of thinking about anger. Additionally, your therapist will help you to learn and practise relaxation techniques to combat your body’s instinctive and physical response anger.
