What is Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry, that is, apprehensive expectation about events or activities. Contrary to its name, the primary sympotm of GAD isn't anxiety, but rather excessive and uncontrollable worry about day to day events. Those struggling with Generalised Anxiety Disorder experience chronic worries, meaning excessive worry has been present for at least six months and isn't solely due to a stressor in the person's life.

Signs of Generalised Anxiety Disorder

The diagnostic criteria for GAD as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-5 (2013), published by the American Psychiatric Association, are described below:

  1. Too much anxiety or worry over more than six months. This is present most of the time in regards to many activities.

    • Problems concentrating
    • Irritability
    • Muscle tension.
    • Problems with sleep
  4. Symptoms result in problems with functioning.
  5. Symptoms are not due to medications, drugs, other physical health problems
  6. Symptoms do not fit better with another psychiatric problem such as panic disorder.

Treatment for Generalised Anxiety Disorder in London

It is possible to treat and manage generalised anxiety disorder and therapy can be very successful in resolving anxiety disorders. Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you to identify and challenge negative thinking and irrational beliefs that trigger anxiety. Components of CBT for GAD includes psychoeducation, self-monitoring, stimulus control techniques, relaxation, self-control desensitization, cognitive restructuring, worry exposure, worry behavior modification, and problem-solving. Mindfulness is a skill to directing your attention to the present moment and your responses to it physically, mentally, and emotionally. Tips for managing anxiety pertain to being mindful of yourself physically. Manage caffeine intake, eat balanced meals, and give yourself a physical outlet for energy such as exercise. With your therapist, you can work to identify triggers, responses, and a plan to cope with the triggers.
