What is Health Anxiety?
Health Anxiety (also known as Hypochondria) is an anxiety disorder characterised by clinically significant anxiety caused by excessive and unfounded fear about one's health. The average age of Health Anxiety onset is late adolescence / early adulthood.
Signs of Health Anxiety
The term Health Anxiety is commonly used to describe an anxiety disorder, characterised by the following signs:
- Marked fear or anxiety with respect to one or more physical illnesses, based on the incorrect interpretation of one or more physical signs or symptoms.
- Tendency to negatively interpret physical signs or symptoms, even after receiving reassurance from expert doctors.
- Tendency to book appointments with many doctors and if they do not receive confirmation of a diagnosis, they may continue to seek second, third and fourth opinions from other doctors.
- Presence of excessive checking behaviours where they will look for marks, lumps, sores and rashes on their body which may indicate the onset of a physical illness.
