What are Obsessive Thoughts?

Obsessive Thoughts are repetitive and persistent thoughts, impulses or images, experienced as intrusive and unwanted. They cause intense anxiety or discomfort. Often those affected by obsessions try to ignore or suppress such thoughts or attempt to neutralise them with other thoughts or actions, without however succeeding. These obsessive thoughts are intruding the mind against the will of the individual.

An important characteristic of Obsessive Thoughts is that they appear to not reflect the beliefs of the subject. On the contrary, sometimes the person judges them as horrible, frightening or even repugnant. Obsessive thoughts are unpleasant. They can cause fear, anxiety, tension or even disgust.


Signs of Obsessions

Common signs that an individual may be struggling coping with Obsessive  Thoughts include the following:

  1. Authomatic obsessive thoughts. They are short and spontaneous.
  2. The individual tries to get ride of the obsessive thoughts without success.
  3. These thoughts provoke intense anxiety, fear and/or disgust.
