Group Therapy in London
What is Group Therapy?
Group Therapy consists of 3-15 individuals meeting with a therapist to address a common challenge (an issue shared among group members). It may be combined with Individual Therapy and is designed to target a specific problem such as anxiety, depression, or substance abuse but is not limited to the aforementioned examples.
Group Therapy in London provides a network of support through peers and the therapist and can assist in helping individuals gain knowledge through shared experiences with others. Regularly listening discussing and listening to others provides an opportunity to gain perspective of personal experience and challenges. Group Therapy may also help validate experiences and utilise peer leadership-allowing you to learn from group members and empower you to share knowledge with group members. Group Therapy may be used as a short-term intervention; length of intervention will depend on issues addressed (for example, Alcoholics Anonymous will be a structured brief intervention).
How does Group Therapy work?
While attending Group Therapy sessions, you will:
- work with your therapist and group members to identify and process experiences and determine the impact these experiences have today.
- be asked to complete tasks in the group that will consists of creating lists, journaling, or identifying behavioural patterns. You may be asked to discuss this with group members.
- participate in sessions that occur one time per week and last approximately 90 minutes.
- have the opportunity to practise communication skills with group members as you listen to their experiences and practise how to respond in a way that promotes health and positive growth.
