Parent-Infant Psychotherapy in London
Parent-Infant Psychotherapy (PIP)
Parent-Infant Psychotherapy (PIP) is used to address problems in the parent-infant relationship such as excessive crying and sleeping or eating difficulties. The goal of PIP is to identify any past experiences of the parents that are impacting their current relationship with the infant and assist them in resolving this issue. Parent-Infant Psychotherapy (PIP) is a supportive intervention and examines how the history of the mother and infant are affected in daily interaction such as sleep, feeding, playing, and stimulation.
Parent-Infant Psychotherapy (PIP) posits that infants obtain a high level of awareness with a limited ability to express themselves and that their expressions may be observed in interactions of feeding, playing, and sleeping. Parent-Infant Psychotherapists are trained to identify nuances in the interactions of caregivers and infants and assist in incorporating alternative responses that foster positive growth in the relationship. This therapy is particularly useful for parents who have a pre-existing mental health condition. This is a supportive therapy for caregivers. Length of this intervention will be contingent on issues addressed and specific therapies used.
How does Parent-Infant Psychotherapy (PIP) work?
While attending PIP sessions, you will:
- work with your therapist to identify and process concerns you have in the relationship with your infant.
- identify and process how to improve observation of the baby’s behaviour and explore effective techniques to reach the baby.
- learn to observe and respond to the infant’s reactions and work to resolve any problems identified.
- participate in sessions that occur one time per week and last approximately 50 minutes.
